Broadband & Telecommunications

The impact of broadband networks cuts across TFG’s practice areas. From utility grid monitoring and telemedicine services to autonomous vehicles and public safety communications, broadband is the underlying infrastructure of the 21st century economy. TFG’s David Hoover has been helping clients –institutional investors, corporations, national associations and municipal governments – anticipate and navigate legislative, regulatory, and technology changes in the broadband and telecommunications sector for over 20 years. His strong connections with policymakers on Capitol Hill, the Administration, and representatives from industry, associations, and public interest groups, gives TFG access to immeasurable resources to successfully address their broadband and telecommunications issues.

Client Successes

National Association of Towns & Townships

Working closely with the sponsors of the STREAMLINE Small Cell Deployment Act – Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Brian Schatz (D-HI) – and staff from the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, TFG was able to improve the legislation on behalf of its client. As a result of its advocacy, the bill now includes two separate shot clocks for permit review, giving smaller local governments more time to review small cell permit applications.

Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA)

On behalf of several utility clients including SCPPA, TFG was able to raise congressional concerns about a Federal Communications Commission rule-making impacting utility communications networks operating in the 6 GHz band. TFG spearheaded a congressional letter to FCC Chairman Pai signed by over a dozen members of Congress. The firm represented its clients in meetings on Capitol Hill and at the Commission and worked collaboratively with utility trade groups to counter advocacy efforts by proponents of the rule-making change.

Other Telecom Advocacy Efforts

Since joining TFG in December 2018, Mr. Hoover has submitted filings to federal agencies on a range of issues – from broadband mapping to cable local franchise rules – for numerous clients. He has also worked on several US Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service ReConnect grants, connected clients with policy experts at a variety of federal agencies, and has closely monitored and reported on broadband and telecommunications legislation and regulations.

Jeremiah’s federal funding experience further strengthens TFG’s legislative and advocacy services.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – TFG is pleased to welcome Jeremiah Van Auken as a Senior Associate. Jeremiah will play a pivotal part in advancing the appropriations and legislative initiatives of TFG’s clients.

“We’re excited to have Jeremiah join our team,” said Roger Gwinn, TFG’s CEO. “His comprehensive experience guiding a variety of clients toward accomplishing their federal funding and policy goals, coupled with his deep knowledge in defense matters, is a valuable addition to our team and clients. "

"I’m looking forward to bringing my experiences in securing funding and navigating the complexities of the federal landscape to TFG and further advancing the goals of TFG’s existing and future clients,” said Jeremiah.

Prior to joining TFG, Jeremiah served as a Senior Associate at Alcalde & Fay, where he supported a range of clients, including local governments, university healthcare research centers, and a research and engineering company. During his tenure, Jeremiah played a crucial role in securing tens of millions of dollars in programmatic appropriations and Community Project Funding through extensive congressional outreach efforts.
