Today the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the award of nine Targeted Airshed Grants to projects in Alaska, California, and Utah. The grants target areas facing the highest levels of ground-level ozone and particulate matter. Most projects focus on replacing old diesel engines in buses, tractors, and trucks or replacing wood burning appliances. Consistent with the Consolidated Appropriation Act of 2017, the competition was only open to the top five most polluted areas relative to ozone, annual PM2.5, or 24-hour PM2.5 standards.
