Today, President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act (S.475) establishing Juneteenth, which is celebrated on June 19th annually, as a national holiday. Because Juneteenth falls on a weekend, The Ferguson Group (TFG) will join federal offices and close on Friday, June 18th in observance of the holiday. We will resume normal operations on Monday, June 21st.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day Union soldiers arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas and announced the freedom of the estimated 250,000 enslaved African American people. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation abolishing slavery in 1863, but Confederate territories continued to practice slavery for over two years until Union soldiers reached every community to enforce emancipation. Since then, Juneteenth has served as a celebration of freedom in Texas and communities across the United States. Click here for more information on the history of Juneteenth
